Sony Clie PEG-SJ30

Sony Clie PEG-SJ30

Sony Clie PEG-SJ30 - Sony has made a real name for itself with its Palm OS PDAs, and the Clié PEG-SJ30 is a good example of why. One of the first things you notice about the SJ30 is how well it has been designed. Sony has made its application shortcut buttons very small keeping the SJ30 as tiny as possible.

There is a flip over lid which locks into a slot on the back of the casing nicely. This means you don't have to add to the overall size or weight of the SJ30 to provide screen protection. The outer casing is typically Sony in style: silver metal that should take some knocks.

Specifications-wise this Clié has plenty going for it. The display is 320 x 320 pixels with a color palette of 65,536 colors. Sony has tweaked Palm OS version 4 to allow this higher than usual resolution which makes it easier to read the screen and to display more data at any one time.

There is 16 MB of memory for applications and data storage, and a Memory Stick slot so you can expand this amount if you need to. The 33 MHz Dragonball Processor provides plenty of oomph, and the internal rechargeable battery should provide power for around 12 days of average use.

The SJ30 includes a range of software over and above the standard Palm fare. What you get includes PictureGear Pocket for viewing still images, Clié Paint for editing images and producing new ones, World Alarm Clock and alarm and round the world time machine, and gMovie for looking at digital video. You also get Documents to Go so you can view and edit Word and Excel files while on the move, and Intellisync Lite for synchronization with Outlook and Lotus Organiser on your PC.

Sony has proved time and again that it knows how to make a PDA. If you are looking for a mid-priced PDA with style, this could be a good choice. --Sandra Vogel
